Your days are numbered

Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts. (Psalms 90:12 HCSB)

On June 5th, 1978 I entered the world as the second born child to John and Cora Hardwick.

Tomorrow I will be 38 years old and I now find myself living in a unique space of time, age, and maturation. At age 36 I was diagnosed with autism. My sense of time has changed. I’m getting older and time has new value attached to it.

It’s been often said that time is money. The phrase is generally used to communicate the value of time, the potential cost of time, and the need to invest our time in similarity to the way we invest our money.
All this may be true, however the major distinction between time and money is that you can always make more money. Time is a resource that is not renewable. Once it’s spent or invested it is gone for all eternity.
Moses knew this, and after pondering just how fragile human life is and weighing it against the awesomeness of an eternal God, who lives outside the constraints of time and space, he realized that we need God’s help to keep us focused on leveraging every single minute of the day for His purpose and our potential.
One of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite books is a quote from a book called Tuesday’s with Morrie by Mitch Albom. Mitch, a prominent sports writer spends 14 Tuesday’s with a former professor as his mentor is approaching his last days in a losing battle with ALS.
On one occasion while talking about the brevity of life, Morrie explains to Mitch “If you learn how to die, you’ll learn how to live.” (paraphrase)

Sounds morbid, but as a former hospice Chaplain, and someone whose walked hundreds of people and their families to death’s door, I have heard similar advice on more than one occasion.
What’s the point?
Live each second, each minute, hour, and day with the wisdom that comes from knowing the real value of the time that God has given you.

Live B.I.G.
